“Answering common questions regarding Coolsculpting” by Dr. Crippen
by Skin Care Expert Dr. Craig Crippen
A painless and non-invasive treatment for unwanted fat must sound like something out of a dream in a world filled with risky pills and fad diets. How could there be an easy way to deal with something that has caused so many to chase down difficult or dangerous solutions?
As unlikely as it may seem, a great treatment that targets the most stubborn areas of fat is already available. It’s called Coolsculpting, and it relies on the latest technology to remove fat from beneath the skin without any cutting or pain.
This revolutionary treatment has been available at clinics around the world for several years now. However, many people still don’t know much about it, how it works, or whether they would be a good candidate. In consulting with my patients, I’ve come across some great questions. In this post, I’m going to be sharing them, along the answers I typically provide:
How does cooling help me to lose weight?
It’s completely true that Coolsculpting works by freezing fat cells. While that may sound uncomfortable, modern technology has enabled us to create a freezing reaction under the skin without upsetting the surface layer. This is done with a hand-held device that simply needs to be guided appropriately over the trouble spots to chill the fat cells beneath.
The body recognizes that the fat cells are damaged and begins to remove and dispose of them soon after the treatment. In this way, even the oldest and most stubborn deposits of fat can be removed.
Is that safe?
Yes, it is. The device has a very tightly-controlled reach, so there is no risk of freezing damage to the organs or even the tissue underneath the fat. Likewise, there is no risk to the skin when the device is applied properly. Neither will be an issue if you choose a clinic that is properly certified for Coolsculpting treatments.
You also don’t need to worry about the damaged fat cells being removed. Removing damaged cells is something that your body does every day. Even if you opt to have a large area treated, it’s unlikely that the energy needed for your body to heal will make a noticeable difference in your day.
What will I feel like when it’s happening?
Your experience may be slightly different depending on the clinic you visit, but I can tell you what my patients in particular have reported. Most people feel very little. Those that do feel something usually describe it as a light tingling or numbing sensation. In my experience, no patient has ever been bothered enough by what they felt to interrupt the treatment.
How long will it take for me to recover?
A recovery period often isn’t necessary. You may not want to stress any spots that have been treated, but almost all of our patients simply return to their regular lives as soon as the treatment is complete. Even lingering discomfort is not typical of our results.
What do I need to do to keep my results?
That fat will return only if the body is creating new stores of fat in the same place. Generally, this won’t happen unless you begin putting on additional weight after your treatment has already ended. Coolsculpting is about managing lingering spots that persist after successful weight loss has already been pursued. Maintaining healthy habits is the best defense against new trouble spots.
