Hello! I suffer from obesity! I weigh 195 pounds and i was considering liposuction as an option to cut 30-40 pounds! Is this feasible? Is it a safe option?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Brigette,
Liposuction isn’t a solution for losing weight. Major weight gain is usually due to excess visceral fat. This builds up internally around your organs, and liposuction can’t reach that. Instead, lipo is for fine-tuning the isolated fatty deposits that sometimes remain behind even after you reach your target weight. Trying to remove a lot of fat with lipo isn’t safe for the patient, and is not an FDA-approved use of the technique.
For losing 40-50 pounds, diet and exercise are your best options. However, once you’ve reached a target weight and maintained it for a while, lipo can definitely help sculpt your body into a more aesthetic shape by targeting remaining problem areas.

Hi Brigette,

Thank you for your question. Liposuction is primarily used to remove pockets of fat that won’t shift no matter how much you diet and exercise. These stubborn areas of fat can be smoothed away to create a more balanced and streamlined body shape. As a doctor I never focus on ”weight loss” being reflected on the scales after having liposuction.

As you are looking to lose weight, I would advise you see your local doctor to discuss your current health and weight loss goals. Diet and nutrition are an essential element to losing and maintaining your weight. Your doctor will be able to do a full health check and recommend exercise and nutrition that is a suitable safe option for you to start losing weight.

Good luck with everything and I hope you achieve your weight loss goals.

Kindest regards,
Dr Ajaka
