It’s easy to take for granted the amazing things that cosmetic surgery is able to achieve today, but people didn’t always have easy access to the often life-changing surgical procedures performed by plastic surgeons as this infographic from MyBreast reminds us.

Starting with the origins of plastic surgery in Ancient Egypt the infographic traces the key places, people and scientific breakthroughs throught history that helped cosmetic surgery develop into what it is today. The inclusion of well-known figures such as Johannes Gutenberg (credited with inventing the printing press) and Leonardo da Vinci demonstrates how the development of cosmetic surgery was heavily influenced by the wider world.

While there’s a brief look at the future of cosmetic surgery (including an interesting forecast that the number of cosmetic surgery procedures performed in the USA will have effectively doubled by 2030) there are no wild predictions about how the face of cosmetic surgery will continue to change. Perhaps this is telling; just like nobody in Ancient Egypt – or Renaissance Italy for that matter – could have accurately guessed what cosmetic surgery in 2015 would look like, who can really predict how cosmetic surgery will look in the future?
