Most patients realize that liposuction makes a permanent change to a person’s body contour. The idea of taking extra steps to ensure lasting results isn’t something that most men and women spend a lot of time thinking about. Yet, although liposuction  does permanently remove the targeted fat cells, that doesn’t mean the results of lipo will last forever. Here are a few ways that you can help ensure lasting results after your liposuction appointment.

Understanding Lipo Limitations

The first step in making sure that your beautiful body sculpting results look great for years to come is to have a better understanding of the procedure itself. Although liposuction is commonly associated with weight loss, lipo is not actually a solution for losing weight. Instead, lipo is ideal for men and women who are already in good physical and mental health and at (or close to) their target weight, yet have one or two problem areas that just won’t go away no matter what they try.

The process of liposuction may make the difference of a few pounds on the scale, but that’s really the byproduct of lipo rather than the purpose. Instead, the goal is to sculpt the body into a smoother, sleeker form that shows more clearly defined muscle tone by removing the fat deposits that diet and exercise have left behind.

Preparing for Success

The process of getting lasting liposuction results begins with a solid foundation. Since liposuction isn’t going to help you lose a significant amount of weight, getting shape is the first step in feeling happy with your results. If you’re not already at a healthy target weight, diet and exercise can help you get there. Once you’re within a few pounds of your weight loss goal, you can start thinking about lipo, especially if your body hung onto some fat in a way you’re not thrilled with.

Eating foods that are good for you and beginning a more active, healthy lifestyle both help set the stage for body sculpting success. Although there are weight loss surgeries out there, lipo isn’t one of them. Losing the majority of any excess weight and establishing good habits now, before your procedure, is a great start for achieving a more aesthetic profile.

Maintaining Long-Term

Throughout the weight loss process, you may notice that the shape of your body isn’t what you’d hoped for, even though you’re happy with the numbers on the bathroom scale. Unfortunately, there isn’t a way to guarantee that the weight drops from exactly the areas of the body you hoped. Even after losing a fair amount of weight, many men and women may notice that fatty deposits linger on in a few problem spots, like around the belly, the love handles, the thighs and the upper arms.

If you’re otherwise in good shape and just need to slim down these isolated areas, you’re the ideal candidate for lipo. During lipo, your surgeon will physically remove the fat cells from the target area; since fat cells don’t grow back, the results are permanent.

However, just because those particular fat cells are gone doesn’t mean that you can’t gain any excess weight back again. The true secret to maintaining lasting results after liposuction is to simply keep on practicing those healthy habits you had before surgery: eat right, stay active and take good care of your body. These practices will help prevent future weight gain that has the potential to undo all your surgeon’s hard work.
