Innovative surgery with penis transplant to be attempted at John Hopkins
We’ve heard much about the potential of organ transplants surgery but it seems this is not a sci fi scenario. The enterpreneurial John Hopkins hospital is now on the verge of carrying out such a surgery. Plastic Surgeon Dr. Richard Redett will attempt a penis transplant surgery in the next weeks. Much research has be done in order for the best possible transplant to be found (in terms of age and color). Its also important that the family of the deceased are willing to donate a transplant. The goal of this project is that the added penis will be functional (including sex and urination) though this is not guaranteed.
The patient that is searching for the transplant had lost most of his penis during a bomb explosion. Till this moment two transplants are already found. As for the procedure, its quite complicated, much more complex than a simple transplantation of other organs. First thing is that blood vessels and neurons are connected and then its important that functionality is restored. If everything goes fine there is also the danger of the body rejecting the transplanted penis, thus its necessary that proper medication will be taken. Finally we need to notice this will be the third attempt for a penis transplant (the first was attempted in 2006, with zero success).
The doctors also stated: “There’s a significant loss with the initial injury that the patient has to overcome emotionally, so we make sure to have a psychiatrist, who is also an expert in psychosexual disorders, on the team”.
