Study shows Breast Implants Surgery related to higher Suicide rates

Alarming are the findings of a new study regarding the connection of suicide and breast augmentation surgery. We knew that psychological reasons (such as to boost a limited self esteem) lie behind the decision of many women to boost their breasts by means of implants. Now things seem to be much more complicated and in agreement with what we are repeatedly claiming when touching such issues: a psychological motive hides an insecurity that can’t be healed with an aesthetic treatment (check this for more details).. on the contrary, such decisions lead nowhere.

The study which was published in the Annals of Plastic Surgery focused on a sample of 3000 women from Sweden who opted for breast augmentation. And its shocking that 24 of them commited suicide during the period the study was conducted (which is 3 times higher that the expected number of suicides for such a sample. Also the study showed a higher risk for death from alcohol or drugs abuse for the specific sample.

What the researchers speculate is that women deciding to opt for breast augmentation seems to suffer from low self esteem or other similar mental issues. The leader of the study, Loren Lipworth  Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Tennessee) claims: “I think we don’t even know how big of a problem it is because we cannot even pinpoint what proportion of women have psychiatric disorders”.

The research didn’t show any connection with breast implants surgery with breast cancer, thought this procedure seems to be related to increased respiratory system issues and lung cancer. The researchers say this is due to the fact that women who undergo such surgery usually smoke more.

This makes it clear how important it is to be totally mindfull of our choice in this field! We need to be tremendously responsible!
