The ethics of aesthetics
In this two-and-a-half-year adventure we feel that we are doing something wrong with LipoAdvisor.com! Aesthetics is a really sensitive field and it is quite important/necessary to shed light to the psychological confusion that people face when opting for a procedure that focuses on aesthetic improvement! This is a clear responsibility for us at LipoAdvisor and we believe that the following lines will help people make things much more clear
The madness of improving my appearance
A really essential question for possible patients lies to the following phrase: Why do i want to improve my appearance? We wonder, question, doubt whether possible patients have a crystal clear answer why they want to improve their appearance! Have they ever honesty thought of this question? Because it’s common that someone is seduced by the image/idea of the beautiful, as it is cultivated by the whole society and just reacts by chasing beauty! This seduction is never good, because it works as a confusing screen in people mind/perception, that doesn’t allow to see the real fact. We wonder whether people really know the reason that lies behind this urge for improving their appearance, trying to catch the image of the ideal beauty! If the reason behind all this movement is just an insecure personality that screams for social approval, what will an aesthetic procedure really offer? We feel that trying to improve our appearance as a reaction for low self confidence and insecurity is just an nonsensical espace from the root of the problem, in other words.. futility! How removing some belly fat will eradicate the feeling of insecurity one feels? And what happens when one suddenly face some wrinkles after removing this belly fat? And if the beauty stereotype suddenly changes one should chase the new idol to feel nice again! Isn’t it beyond doubt an exhausting struggle? Isn’t it a race without end? Do people ask themselves these questions?
The costs of aesthetic improvement
When speaking of costs we don’t refer only to financial costs which is a really serious cost that everybody should consider when thinking of aesthetic improvement! The expenses can be extremely high, thousands of dollars, but this is definitely not the only cost. What happens when someone opts for a procedure that improves one’s body instead of having a relaxing vacation!? What is the real cost when one pushes oneself to work hard in order to save money that will make this aesthetic procedure evitable? And what about the anxiety/fear that lies behind the real outcome of a procedure? How much anxiety someone feels before a surgery that could possibly harm one’s body? Can we measure the stress one feels when expecting that a procedure will hopefully give one a perfect nose or abs? And what happens if our expectations are not fullfilled? And then comes the psychological cost of recovering from a cosmetic procedure, which is definitely painful (more or less). Non surgical methods are evolving in all fields of aesthetics (Botox, Coolsculpting, etc) but even these won’t keep patients away from all these costs!
Is plastic/cosmetic surgery a useless tool? Definitely NOT!
Don’t misunderstand what is written in the previous paragraphs! We really don’t feel that plastic or cosmetic surgery is a devil’s tool! Plastic/cosmetic surgery is another instrument that can be used reasonably and it does work wonders once it’s used the right way! Genetical dysmorphias, traumas brought about by accidents, burns, injuries, urgent obesity issues, craniofacial disorders and other similar situations create a huge field where Plastic surgery can literally make our lives better and earth a better place! We don’t doubt how useful cosmetic or plastic surgeons are. We don’t doubt how necessary is plastic surgery! Please don’t misunderstand!
What should a patient do?
This is a quite simple question every possible patient can answer with a little bit of honesty! The craze of all the latest hypes (see selfies, eyebrows transplants, jaws makeover, butt augmentation and so on) will never end but what is the responsibility of a person that is considering such options? The answer is quite simple. Just be sincere with yourself! Why does one want to opt for a specific procedure? If there is not a real reason, like the ones mentioned in the previous paragraph, one will definitely realise the futility of his urge, how silly it really sounds, if only being quite sincere! Urge, desire, inevitably disappears when you really see, you feel it in your whole body, how nonsensical it is to push yourself in such a madness! So before opting for such options you only need a clear mind to see the beauty of the real truth. Insecurity, inferiority complexes, neurosis will never be drastically healed by means of plastic surgery! This is a fact!
But as we always say.. the choice is always yours!
