Tummy Tuck or Liposuction? Dr. Nein Answers this old question
One of the most common issues for people seeking aesthetic treatments is how to contour their belly area! Most of you are aware of the two basic options in order to obtain a sexy belly! Liposuction (as well as Non surgical Liposuction alternatives), Tummy Tuck and combinations of these treatments are among the most popular options! But when the question comes to which is best, Tummy Tuck or Liposuction, there is not a clear answer. Dr. Mark Schusterman had published an article regarding this subject at LipoAdvisor.com earlier this spring. In that article, Dr. Schusterman gave Liposuction a lead, due to its much less invasive nature, comparing to Tummy Tuck. And its true that the side effects of a Tummy Tuck are much more serious comparing to the ones of Liposuction.. but what about the effectiveness of the two procedures?
Now Dr. Nein, a Nashville cosmetic surgeon shares another point of view. According to Dr. Nein there are 3 belly contouring options, liposuction, mini tummy tuck and tummy tuck. But which is the best of them? The renowned surgeon says: “Our bodies go through many changes throughout our lives. Aging, weight increases and losses, pregnancy, periods of exercise, periods when exercise is avoided or isn’t possible, all have an effect on our bodies. Sometimes our stomachs pay the price for our lives and just don’t look the way we want them to.” and adds “Each of these procedures is different and accomplishes different things, so each is best suited for different situations. It’s important to realize that these procedures address only the stomach; additional liposuction, or other procedures, can be combined to further improve your overall appearance.”
Dr. Nein tries to describe the pros and cons of each method:
Liposuction can definitely remove fat from the belly area but it offers only limited skin contraction while it can’t improve the toning of stomach muscles or the widening of the linea alba which is something common in pregnancy.
Actually Linea alba widening can’t be treated neither with lipo nor with proper exercise because it consist of neither muscles nor fat. In such case surgery is the only option! Tummy Tuck is the best option for this while during a tummy tuck the excess fat and skin are removed (via incision) and the muscles and linea alba are stitched in order to be tightened up.
Finally Dr. Nein suggests that Mini Tummy Tuck is ideal for “those women who have excess skin primarily below the belly button and who don’t have too much stretching of the muscle layer,”
So according to Dr. Nein, there is not a clear winner in the Liposuction Vs Tummy Tuck comparison. Tummy Tuck is better in cases where an extended reconstruction is necessary. In all other cases the plastic surgeon should opt for Liposuction, Mini Tummy Tuck or a combo of these two (relatively less invasive) options.
