“What Drives People to Have Cosmetic Surgery?” by Dr. M. Joffrey

The very concept of having cosmetic surgery being embedded into people’s sense of fashion and beauty has been debated over the decades. While some believe that this procedure is both expensive and unnecessary, others think that cosmetic surgery is a right and a privilege – if you can afford it then there is nothing wrong with choosing to undergo it.
Understanding Cosmetic Surgery
Cosmetic surgery, by its definition, is a process that involves modifying, maintaining, or enhancing one’s physical appearance through scientific means. Today’s techniques make it possible for patients to undergo the procedure at a much lower cost, safer procedures, and faster healing. These factors make the procedure much appealing than it used to be in the previous decades. However, in order for one to know if plastic surgery is something that can be good for them, it is very important for patients to understand what they want to achieve after they undergo an operation.
Motivating Factors
According to research by Markey and Markey, young women are interested in undergoing cosmetic surgery mainly because they are motivated by their dissatisfaction in their physical appearance. This feeling is also often triggered by their experiences of being teased about how they look, or feeling that in order to be beautiful, they have to look like the people that they see in the television and the movies. Since cosmetic surgery has already been perceived as a safe and affordable solution to personal beauty biases, people think that it is an acceptable means to improve their quality of life.
Understanding Expectations
Many people believe that changing their physical appearance to one that is acceptable is the key to gaining several opportunities. These opportunities can range from having improved personal relationships or getting career advancement. However, cosmetic surgery practitioners argue that while many people believe that their lives would be much better once they achieve their notion of beauty, self-acceptance is still very important when wanting to achieve satisfaction.
No surgery can possibly change the fact that people age and that norms of aesthetics may change from time to time. People who are thinking of undergoing the procedure should remember that it is still very important to have a positive self-image that is not confined to their outward appearance. For this reason, before wanting to have a surgery, understand your reasons, and see if having a flawless skin would really improve your sense of self. If not, then it may be better to first discover what would make you accept yourself better.
