Tumescent Liposuction

Liposuction Techniques

Tumescent liposuction is a part of the Wet liposuction procedures and it is quickly becoming one of the most popular liposuction techniques around the world. The word “tumescent” means “swollen” or “firm,” and describes the fact that large volumes of material are injected into the body as part of the procedure. Like other liposuction operations, tumescent liposuction utilizes a cannula, which is a thin, hollow tube that is inserted through an incision in the skin into the area that is going to be worked on. Tumescent liposuction can be done under general anesthesia or local anesthesia. Tumescent Liposuction is considered as the Traditional Liposuction Technique!

How does tumescent liposuction work?

Below we will see how Tumescent Liposuction works in 3 simple steps:

  • First, a cannula is inserted into the area of fat that is going to be removed and it injects diluted lidocaine, saline and epinephrine into the fat.
  • Lidocaine is a local anesthetic that desensitizes the area. Epinephrine shrinks the size of the capillaries in the area. The injected fluids cause the targeted areas to become swollen and firm.
  • The surgeon moves the cannula back and forth and this along with the effect of saline destroys the fat tissue and the destroyed fat cells are removed by suction. The amount of the broken cells that are not removed are absorbed by the body. This surgery can be performed while the patient is wide awake without any intravenous sedation, which has made it an appealing option to many patients.

Benefits

  • Limited Blood Loss
The benefit of the epinephrine is that the drug reduces bleeding. There is usually minimal or even no bleeding during the surgery and after the operation is complete. While many older methods are viable for liposuction, this is a major advantage over older techniques. Typical blood loss during tumescent liposuction is literally no more than 1 to 2 tablespoons—and that’s during a larger volume procedure. Blood loss from other liposuction operations used to be one of the larger risks associated with the procedure, so much so that doctors who perform other techniques sometimes ask patients to donate some of their own blood to their own procedure weeks in advance. That way if excessive blood is lost, the blood which they donated to their own procedures can be put back in their bodies. Since tumescent liposuction reduces bleeding, this pre-operative step can be skipped, and there is also generally substantially less bruising after the procedure than there would be with many other techniques.
  • The benefits of Local Anesthetics
Some patients wonder whether local anesthetics are sufficient to do the operation safely and painlessly. Not only are they sufficient to remove pain from the surgical site, but they are also safer than general anesthesia or IV sedation, both of which may pose risks to the patients. So the option of Lidocaine Local Anesthesia is another huge advantage of Tumescent Liposuction. Patients who are interested in tumescent liposuction should take note that not all surgeons are trained in delivering local anesthetics and performing surgery without the use of general anesthesia. Many of these surgeons will say that they perform a technique “based on” tumescent liposuction or derived from it—the procedure is the same except that you’ll be asleep during it or on IV sedation. • Tiny Incisions
The incisions which are used during tumescent liposuction are usually only about 1.5 mm and do not require stitches, which further reduces blood loss. Since the wounds remain open, they usually drain more effectively. This also reduces bruising as well as exposure to risk for further complications (more info here.

Cost

According to Realself.com the average cost of Tumescent liposuction is at $4775 but as it happens in all liposuction techniques the cost for a tumescent liposuction process depends on many factors like the popularity of the surgeon, which area will be treated as well as the size of the area to be treated!

Body Areas to Be Treated

Tumescent Liposuction is among the safest and most popular liposuction options at the moment and it can be used to remove fat from almost every part of the body like abdomens, waist, thighs, buttocks, neck, back, chin, flanks or arms!

Our Advice

So in summary, the main reasons that tumescent liposuction appeals to customers are twofold. Firstly, you may be able to be wide awake while you’re getting tumescent liposuction. If general anesthesia concerns you for medical reasons or otherwise, you can get liposuction using nothing but local anesthetics. The other reason is that tumescent liposuction greatly reduces bleeding. This can make the surgery itself less traumatic and also potentially reduce the time it takes to recover. And don’t forget, before you go in for tumescent liposuction, double check that the surgeon will be performing the procedure under local anesthetics only.
