India: Experts call for Cosmetic Surgery Regulations
It’s a fact that Cosmetic Procedures are becoming more popular in India. At the same moment noone can refuse that also the number of procedures that went wrong is rapidly increasing! Experts in India suggest the creation of a board according to the British model! UK recently established a Review commitee for Cosmetic procedures in order to regulate the numerous cosmetic procedures (non surgical and surgical) that can obviouslygo wrong!
Dr. Sunil Choudhary, the director of reconstructive surgery at Max Healthcare says “There is no single qualification which leads to a degree in cosmetic surgery in the whole world. This lack of regulation of both the products and specialties has been responsible for the recent disaster of PIP breast implants and the next disaster waiting to happen would be of dermal fillers.” and adds “The need of the hour is to set up a review body by the medical council of India on the lines of review recently undertaken by the General medical Council, UK, with inputs of all stake holders to put a safety net in placewhich can make cosmetic practitioners accountable and also provide guidelines for practice.”
Besides, Dr. Jamuna Pai, a Mumbai Cosmetologist, underlines the importance of choosing the right doctor, choosing a clinic/hospital with top notch facilities and hygiene standards while he mentions it is essential to be fully aware of the side effects involved in the procedure he is considering!
Let’s see if India will open a new page in terms of Cosmetics in order to assure patients will enjoy a much safer experience.
