“Liposuction is the Top Surgical Procedure in the U.S.” by Dr. Wright
by Cosmetic Surgeon Dr. Thomas Wright
With 21st century technology cosmetic procedures have never been easier and yielded such great results. Millions are resorting towards cosmetic procedures to restore youthful appearances and to achieve that perfect looking body. Over the years these methods have become more effective and safer. In 2013, over 15 million Americans received some form of cosmetic procedure. Among the most common surgical procedures were liposuction, breast augmentation, blepharoplasty, adbominoplasty, and rhinoplasty. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, liposuction was the most popular surgical procedure in 2013 with 363,912 procedures total.
Of all the people who received liposuction, it was most common for ages 35-64. While liposuction is popular in all adult populations, younger adults tend to be more inclined towards breast augmentation while older adults underwent more facelifts.
Plain and simple liposuction is a fast and easy way to shed unwanted pounds. Nearly everyone has a pocket of fat somewhere that just won’t seem to go away despite diet and exercise. Since its introduction in the 1970s, liposuction has grown dramatically and revolutionized the concept of weight loss. In the past few years alone plastic surgeons have observed a steady increase in this growing procedure. From 2012 to 2013, the number of liposuction procedures increased by 16%. This trend is expected to continue as more and more people want that slim, ideal body shape.
One of the greatest reasons for its popularity is due to the extent in which it has changed over the years. Originally liposuction was an intensive surgery that required general anesthesia and substantial downtime. Now thanks to new technology liposuction is a minimally invasive procedure that is effective and has little downtime. Patients today are typically treated with tumescent anesthesia which allows them to stay awake and feel virtually nothing in the targeted area. This is a much safer approach than going under general anesthesia. Furthermore, tumescent anesthesia is also effective at decreasing bleeding which leaves the procedure very clean. Another attraction of modern liposuction is that most doctors use very small tools and effective laser technology that is excellent at removing fat. With this technology liposuction only involves several small incisions and that is it. This means little downtime and no scarring. With all of these advancements in the field of cosmetic surgeries it is no wonder why liposuction is becoming so popular.
