New Study shows Liposuction has no Health Benefits
In a previous article we mentioned the reallly encouraging results of a study with 300 liposuction patients that showed Liposuction can bring down the amounts of blood triglycerides! Now the results of another study from researchers at Washington University School of Medicine show liposuction can’t reduce the health risks connected with obesity!
The study shows that a liposuction procedure isn’t able to change the cholesterol levels, blood pressure, insulin sensitivity thus making it inevitable for it to prevent hypertension, diabetes and heart diseases, while diet can do it!
15 women with abdominal obesity participated in this research. 8 of them were not diabetic while 7 of them had Diabetes type 2. The participants had a pre op insulin sensitivity test as wells as blood lipids and blood pressure measuring. Finally the patients were measured for markers of chronic blood inflammation which is a sign of coronary disease.
7 days later the 15 participants had an extended liposuction treatment (removing a huge amount of their body fat). The testers had measurements of the same parameters (that were counted pre op) 10-12 weeks post treatment! The amount of fat removed was 18{f4e1575822752660c3387461b06f16047197db710b64f29e8565d582c3a8cd4f}-19{f4e1575822752660c3387461b06f16047197db710b64f29e8565d582c3a8cd4f} while the average BMI was reduced by an average of 2.3 points for non diabetics and by 3.9 points for diabetics.
What was interesting with this study? All markers that were counted before lipo (blood pressure, blood lipids, blood glucose) didn’t seem to be reduced. The authors of the study commented “Despite removing large amounts of subcutaneous fat, about 20 percent of our subject’s total body fat mass, there were no beneficial medical effects,” and concluded: “Abdominal liposuction does not significantly improve obesity-associated metabolic abnormalities. Decreasing adipose tissue mass alone will not achieve the metabolic benefits of weight loss”.
On the contrary, the previously mentioned study (with 300 participants) showed a 43{f4e1575822752660c3387461b06f16047197db710b64f29e8565d582c3a8cd4f} reduction in post op blood triglycerides! So we guess much more research has to be carried out in order for safer and more accurate conclusions regarding the health benefits of Liposuction!
