PIP implants are a type of breast implants produced by the French company Poly Implant Prothèse. The implants caused a scandal back in 2010 when it became apparent that they were being created using a cheap type of silicone gel intended for making mattresses rather than medical-grade fillers.
PIP implants were given market approval in 1997 and were being used up until they were suspended from being used in 2010. It still hasn’t been proven when the company started to use the cheap silicone gel and it is thought that over 40,000 women in the UK have had PIP Implants.

Since the scandal was brought to light, extensive research has been carried out on the implants to show that they are more prone to rupture and leakage than other implants and they contain a higher level of siloxanes than other implants. The research also identified that the PIP implants do not have a significant risk to human health.
When it was released that the implants were faulty it caused a global health scare, with women in over 65 countries affected. When the implants rupture it is said that the silicone gel can leak into the body; although some women won’t notice at all, it can cause the scar tissue to change shape, affecting the shape of the breast. In addition, the gel can be an irritant which would cause the victim pain.
