ASPS Reports 2% Increase in USA Cosmetic Surgery for 2015
During 2014 there was a 3% boost in cosmetic surgery according to ASPS (American Society of Plastic Surgeons). Now the new stats that were recently published from ASPS show a new incredible increase of 2% during the 12 months of 2015. The total number of cosmetic procedures (surgical and non surgical) in USA wa 15.9 million procedures which is an 115% increase comparing to 2000.
The ASPS President, David H. Song stated: “While more traditional facial procedures and breast augmentations are still among the most popular, we’re seeing much more diversity in the areas of the body patients are choosing to address,” and added“Patients have more options than ever, and working closely with their surgeon, they’re able to focus on specific target areas of the body to achieve the look they desire.”
Among the interesting findings of this year’s statistics is that there is a simultaneus increase in many lifting procedures like buttock lifts, breast lifts, lower body lifts etc which somehow decreased the amount of facelifts that were carried out through 2015 (thus bringing them below the top 5 of surgical cosmetic procedures (leaving space for Tummy Tuck to enter the top 5).
Surgical Cosmetic Procedures – Top 5
As for the top 5 of the surgical cosmetic procedures (a total number of 1.7 million procedures), Breast Augmentation is the clear no1 (though it had a 2% decrease during 2015) while Liposuction (up 5% comparing to 2014) was second taking the place of Nose reshaping (which was the No2 for 2014). Lets have a look at the Top 5:
- Breast augmentation (279,143 procedures, 2% decrease comparing to 2014)
- Liposuction (222,051 procedures, 5% increase comparing to 2014)
- Nose reshaping (217,979 procedures, unchanged comparing to 2014)
- Eyelid surgery (203,934 procedures, 1% decrease comparing to 2014)
- Tummy tuck (127,967 procedures, 9% increase comparing to 2014 )
Non Surgical/Minimally Invasive Cosmetic Procedures – Top 5
The total amount of non surgical cosmetic procedures during 2015 was 14.2 million. The Top 5 of 2015 was identical to this of 2014. Botulinum Toxin Type A was again the obvious No1. Here is the Top 5:
- Botulinum Toxin Type A (6.7 million procedures, 1% increase comparing to 2014)
- Soft Tissue Fillers (2.4 million procedures, 6% increase comparing to 2014)
- Chemical Peel (1.3 million procedures, 5% increase comparing to 2014)
- Laser hair removal (1.1 million procedures, not changed comparing to 2014)
- Microdermabrasion (800,340 procedures, 9% decrease comparing to 2014)
Dr. Song had also a comment for non surgical/minimally invasive procedures: “The number of available providers, lower costs and the less-invasive nature of these procedures obviously appeal to a much broader range of patients,” and added “However, we urge anyone who is considering a minimally-invasive procedure to consult with a board-certified, ASPS-member surgeon.”
A few other interesting findings of the 2015’s statistics are that for first time Male Breast Reduction Surgeries were more than 40% of the total number of breast reduction surgeries (27456 out of 68106). At the same moment the most rapidly expanding procedure was Buttock Implants (a 36% boost comparing to 2014). Finally we need to highlight the fact that the national Breast Reconstruction Awareness Campaign that was launched on 2012 seems to bring great results while the number of women that had mastectomy (in order to face Breast Cancer) and opted for breast reconstruction had a 4% increase. Dr. Song states: “That’s encouraging, and we hope to continue to get the word out to all women who are facing breast cancer, so they will be well aware of all their reconstructive options from the outset of diagnosis”.
