There’s no question that childbirth has noticeable effects on a woman’s body. Many new moms are eager to recapture their pre-baby bodies, but the truth is that the process can be tedious and difficult. And with a new little one on your hands, making time to exercise can be difficult.

Childbirth and nursing can take a toll on a number of areas of the body, most notably the breasts and tummy. Some of these areas can be targeted with diet and exercise, while others may not be so easily returned to their pre-pregnancy state. Pregnancy and nursing can leave the breasts looking deflated or droopy, while loose skin and stretch marks often remain around the belly. To help women tackle their post-pregnancy body concerns, more plastic surgeons are offering what is called a “mommy makeover.”

What Is a Mommy Makeover?

A mommy makeover is designed to help beautiful moms regain their beautiful feminine figures. The perk of having a mommy makeover is that it combines multiple surgical procedures into one session. For example, women in San Jose often combine a breast augmentation or lift with liposuction or a tummy tuck for a mommy makeover package. However, a mommy makeover can include any number or combination of procedures, including a facelift, eyelid surgery, and thigh lift. The procedures combined can be customized to address each woman’s individual concerns.

Mommy makeovers most commonly address the abdomen and breasts, since most women experience dramatic changes during their pregnancy. Women who have lost volume in their breasts can restore it with a breast augmentation with implants. In fact, breast augmentation is among the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures in the U.S. with more than 290,000 procedures performed in 2013 according to a report from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons®. Some women also experience discomfort due to increased breast volume after pregnancy, which can be addressed with a breast reduction.

The beauty of it is that by combining procedures, you are also combining recovery times (as opposed to having multiple recoveries). Just keep in mind that this makes for an overall longer surgery and recovery time.

Is a Mommy Makeover Right for You?

A mommy makeover isn’t for everyone, and it’s important to abide by your surgeon’s recommendations. There are several important aspects to consider. Each woman is different, but most surgeons recommend waiting at least 6 months after having children according to New Beauty magazine. This will allow your body and hormones time to get back to normal. Mommy makeover patients should also have stopped breastfeeding before their surgery.

Another factor to keep in mind is whether you are planning to have more children. It’s best to wait until you are done having children, particularly if you are having abdominal surgery, in order to maintain long-term results.

In addition to timing, mommy makeover candidates should be in good health. Cosmetic surgery is an investment in your personal happiness and well-being, so you want to be sure to keep that investment healthy.
