“Top 5 Cosmetic Procedures that were once Taboo, but now Commonplace” by Dr. Goldman
by Cosmetic Surgeon Robert Goldman
In the last 15 years or so, cosmetic surgery has boomed in popularity. Whilst many people still remain secretive about what procedures they have had, the rise of reality TV and media spotlight has somewhat changed the acceptance of cosmetic surgery in a much more positive light. As this acceptance fuels the rise of cosmetic surgery, today – it’s now as common as ever.
From Botox to liposuction, breast impacts and face lifts women and men from all walks of life are using such procedures to enhance their looks or fix certain flaws. Over the years, the procedures have evolved and those that were once considered taboo are now being requested by a significant amount of people – cosmetic surgery is definitely here to stay. Here’s our top cosmetic procedures that were once considered outrageous, now someone you know is doing.
1. Facial Liposuction
Liposuction has come a long way over the past 15 years. It’s a modern cosmetic surgery that gives its patients an ideal solution to the old age problem – and many people are arguably addicted to its benefits. As normal as liposuction has been for a while now, facial liposuction is however, a relatively new procedure to be classified as common.
It makes sense though, when it’s your face that people will first notice the signs of aging. Because it’s the one area that cannot be exercised and toned naturally, chubby cheeks, lumpy necks and double chins can be a big problem for many. Years ago, a procedure like this would be considered almost extreme but today technological advances make procedures like this better accessible and much less invasive.
2. Brazilian Waxing
For many, it seems crazy that women thought the Brazilian bikini was shocking only a decade ago when today, the procedure is a prime part of a women’s regimen. It just goes to show really, how much the acceptance of such practices to make you feel (and look!) better about yourself have most certainly evolved.
The trend for women to maintain a clean and organised look down there has rubbed off on the males, too. As common as Brazilian waxing is for women, many men are now making regular appointments to clean up their own appearances. Seeking the same feeling and experience a Brazilian wax can offer women, it’s now considered far from taboo for men to indulge in genital treatments.
3. Face and Buttock Implants
Whilst you can get facial liposuction to rid extra fat build up in the area and give the face a balanced contour, it cannot offer patients firm facial muscles. Facial liposuction works by a small micro-cannulas that discreetly removes the excess fat and fine lines by pulling the skin back. Facial implants on the other hand, can really make a difference to the actual muscles boosting the overall appearance significantly.
For the same reasons as face implants have been popular, buttock augmentation has also taken a top spot for procedures that have not been previously considered prevalent until recently. Over the last few years, there’s been a significant increase in the number of face and buttock implants with buttock augmentation in the lead (58{f4e1575822752660c3387461b06f16047197db710b64f29e8565d582c3a8cd4f} increase), according to results from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery conducted last year.
4. Labiaplasty
Another cosmetic procedure that found itself in the top five of increased popularity, Labiaplasty is far more common and acceptable now than it used to be. Also known as the ‘designer vagina’, patients have expressed a need for this procedure based on cosmetic issues. Labiaplasty has boomed in attractiveness predominately because of the increase of intimate hair removal. Patients that participate in IPL treatments or Brazilian waxing are making their specific body part more prominent – thus for many, the need for it to look its absolute best is definitely there.
The ‘designer vagina’ follows the trend for many women’s desire to keep things well maintained. Whilst it is a cosmetic procedure that’s stemmed from perceived-as-normal images of naked women in magazines, many women find it necessary to undergo the procedure due to chronic pain or discomfort during intercourse or flaws they are self-conscious about.
5. Male Cosmetic Procedures
We’ve seen over the years how the need for cosmetic procedures isn’t just about the female image anymore. Men too are under the same media pressure to look their best, freshen up their looks and keep things well-maintained. As celeb men make cosmetic procedures like liposuction and genital waxing a “cool” and normal thing to do, more men are starting to live up to the expectations.
As a result, men are starting to turn to such procedures like breast reduction surgery and Rhinoplasty to boost their self-esteem, enhance their looks and generally feel a lot better about themselves. Ear reshaping and eyelid surgery are particular popular amongst men too, as they yearn for a more youthful appearance. Whether it’s society’s obsession with appearance and selfies or not, the demand for male cosmetic procedures definitely doesn’t seem to be slowing down in the near future.
