What Lies behind the rise in Male Cosmetic Surgery

It’s a doubtless fact! Males now face cosmetic surgery from another point of view! We didn’t need official stats to realise this fact but when BAAPS provides such stats it’s the best confirmation of this trend! And it’s not only the UK that shows this trend! It’s a global phenomenon and it would be interesting to investigate it!

But let’s have a look at BAAPS’ stats first: According to them there is a 16% (!!) boost in male rhinoplasty for 2013 comparing to 2012! During the same period there was an 28% increase in liposuction and 24% rise in man boobs surgery. These numbers are not just an indication, it’s a clear image beyond doubt!

But what lies behind all these trends! According to renowned plastic surgeons like Dr. Jag Chana it’s all about the celebrities industry and the images they use to demonstrate the ideal beauty!  David Beckham and other “perfect” males are now the epitome of aesthetic perfection! Dr. Chana writes in his blog at Huffington Post:  “Why is this rise occurring? Well, I say pictures of David Beckham’s torso are to blame! Our fast-paced, digitally-driven environment has meant constant bombardment of images of perfect looking celebrities and shirtless models. As with the effect the media has had on women to stay slim, men are becoming more body conscious and in want of a toned torso.”

Though all this is an obvious there is a difference in the motives that lead females and males to plastic/cosmetic surgery! While women opt for cosmetic surgery in order to satisfy their mate or to get back in the dating game (more attractive than ever) men just want to increase their self confidence and feel just better! The rise in cosmetic surgery is higher for males that are on the early thirties where the signs of “getting older” become more evident! It seems that males opt for cosmetics for themselves while women do it in order to gain attention, to attract males!

Dr. Chana concludes by highlighting the fact that even if being a male or a female it’s quite important to opt for the right, ethical surgeon when investigating the options that cosmetic surgery offers!
